24 Stories of Family Arts

BarrowFull
Playcations

Best Family Arts Activity Nominee

“This has really opened my eyes to what art is. I only thought of art as painting and drawing but it is so much more!” – Participant

During the six days of Playcations, BarrowFull brought a free, family-friendly programme to areas of low arts engagement within Barrow (itself a place of low engagement).

The programme included art, music, street theatre, stop-motion film making and giant outdoor board games. The events were designed for groups of friends and families to attend together with activities suitable for all ages.

BarrowFull is part of Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme. From working with young people who are among marginalised groups due to their disability status, sexuality and/or gender, to working with people who are living outside mainstream schooling, with many living in poverty in a socially and physically isolated town. BarrowFull embrace the views and input from all the young people that they work with and provide an outlet for family creativity to thrive.

Their three major free family friendly large-scale public events in the last year have been A BarrowFull of Christmas (a festive celebration of local and national artists); Festival of Colour (a spring-time festival celebrating multicultural creativity) and the ever-popular summer Playcations, which included BSL interpretation. These major events have been programmed around various parts of Barrow, including the town centre, skate parks, community centres, supermarkets and local areas of natural beauty.
