Best Age-Friendly Outreach Nominee

“I tried something new which I didn’t think possible at this age.” – Participant

art:links is a bespoke, empowering programme of weekly creative workshops delivered by professional practising artists, bringing together isolated, vulnerable older people to connect, build skills, and nurture wellbeing.

Co-designed with partner services to enhance their provision, and with participants to meet their needs, art:links has seen significant expansion, from three partners in 2019 to 15 partners in 2023; delivering 437 workshops with 772 older participants.

Create is the UK’s leading charity empowering lives, reducing isolation and enhancing wellbeing through the creative arts.

People need to create. Creativity improves our emotional and mental health. It builds skills and brings joy. It allows us to think differently and to express ourselves. But many are denied these vital experiences. And it is often the most marginalised in society who are the most excluded from the creative arts.

For 20 years, Create has provided free high-quality creative arts experiences for people facing challenges in their lives, working with professional artists and community partners to bring creativity to people where they already are.

Since 2003, Create has run 13,481 workshops with over 44,000 vulnerable and isolated participants. Over 2,100 participants benefit from their work annually. They run person-centred projects, designed in consultation with participants and tailor-made to fill a gap in local creative arts provision.

Create’s work is delivered by over 55 professional practising artists across 16 artforms, including dance, music, drama and photography, combining outstanding artistic skill with experience of leading projects in challenging community settings.

The work is based on a fundamental principle: Everyone should have access to the life-enriching power of creativity.
