24 Stories of Family Arts

Royal Shakespeare Company
Like I Care

Audience Impact & Innovation Award Nominee

“Being able to see their finalised artwork on display in Stratford gave the young carers a sense of pride and achievement. It allowed them to believe in themselves and their capabilities. Opportunities such as this are few and far between for these young children so for them to be able to take part in such a worthwhile project has been invaluable.” – WYC Family Support Worker

This project was inspired by the two sisters in the film My Neighbour Totoro. While the sisters’ mother is away, the elder sister, Satsuki, takes a caregiving role towards her younger sister, Mei.  The RSC have collaborated in workshops with Warwickshire Young Carers to transform their unique lived experiences into art.

The resulting artworks from the project were shown at The Barbican and on Stratford-upon-Avon High Street, showcasing stories from Harry (7), changing a washing machine filter to Martha (14), reading a sibling bedtime stories. Each installation has an augmented reality element so audiences can listen to the stories of the young people.

The Royal Shakespeare Company is a major British theatre company, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. The company employs over 1,000 staff and produces around 20 productions a year.

As well as producing theatre, the RSC has a large Creative Placemaking and Public Programming team who work in outreach and participation. They aim to design projects and activities that enrich the local community and increase the RSC’s accessibility and diversity by engaging with areas of the community that may not have been traditionally supported by the local area. One of their projects to make visitors’ experience more accessible is their RSC Sensory Map. The map was created with 96 co-collaborators and is designed to introduce visitors to the sensory experiences that their building has to offer. Through touch, sound, and sights they hope to increase the accessibility of the RSC.

For the Like I Care project the Creative Placemaking and Public Programmes Department worked in co-creation with Warwickshire Young Carers to transform their unique everyday experiences into creative outputs. Workshops also continued, with more of Warkwickshire’s young carers co-curating an online exhibition of items from the RSC’s world-renowned collection.
