24 Stories of Family Arts
Travelling Light Theatre Company
Louder Than Words
Audience Impact & Innovation Award Nominee
“Travelling Light really meets the young people’s needs. I’ve tried lots of things before and they haven’t worked, but this does. Bristol really needs this – It’s so hard to find something that works for your child. Louder Than Words has got a unique something about it, and I am so grateful.” – Parent
Louder Than Words is a unique drama group for disabled young people aged 7 years and over. Each week, young people have fun, make friends and learn new skills in drama, music and storytelling in a supported and friendly environment with a team of experienced practitioners.
The group is always adapting and being flexible to the changing needs of those taking part. Sessions are planned with the individual needs of young people in mind and delivered in a way which supports each group member’s development and participation.
Young people share what they have learnt and created with their families in a sharing event.
Travelling Light Theatre Company creates outstanding theatre for and with young people that inspires their thinking, engages their emotions and fires their imaginations.
Travelling Light has created professional theatre for young audiences since 1984, and they have toured award-winning productions to schools, theatres and festivals around the UK and internationally. They are deeply embedded in the community of Barton Hill, Bristol (within one of the most deprived wards in the UK), where they have been working for over 20 years.
They offer a thriving participation programme for children and young people aged 7-25. This includes an extensive Youth and Community programme, including weekly theatre groups where children can share stories and ideas, and family activities in the school holidays, bringing children and families together to enjoy drama games and crafts, share healthy food, have fun and socialise.
Their Creative Learning programme provides engaging activities to support pupil confidence, self-expression and curriculum learning.
Travelling Light’s work is underpinned by the belief that every child is entitled to create, imagine and experience great stories told through theatre. They proactively engage with children who would otherwise have little or no access to arts and cultural activities through their productions and participatory work.
