BLAST Fest
What do you get if you combine the creative energy of the arts with the intellectual rigour of science and the richness of Black culture? You get the positive explosive energy of Black STEAM!
Black STEAM is autobiographical storytelling in TED Talk style. The event tells the stories of four Black people working in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics (STEAM), sharing each of their personal journeys across their education and career lifespan. Attendees enjoyed free all-day access to the museum, while BLAST Fest partners delivered activities across the museum, including sport & science activities by the Commonwealth Games, demonstrations by researchers from the University of Birmingham; and Kimawenzi, an African storytelling session to the sounds of the African drum, delivered by Natty Mark Samuels & reggae musician, Asha B.
BLAST Fest’s pop-up festival and community engagement platform fuses science, arts and Black culture to bring people together, build knowledge and catalyse social change.
BLAST Fest have been shortlisted for Best Family Arts Activity in the 2022 Fantastic for Families Awards. Winners will be announced on 16 November 2022 in the free online awards ceremony.
