30 Stories of Family Arts:
Scarabeus Aerial Theatre

The ability to fly has been an age old fantasy for young and old. No wonder we look at birds up above with envy. No wonder many of our cartoon superheroes can fly, as easily as we can walk. In reality, gravity does a very good job of binding us to the ground no matter how hard we flap our arms! However, Scarabeus Theatre, with their Flying Families programme gives us a chance to soar.

Flying Families is a programme of creative aerial workshops for parents/carers and their children. A great way of bonding and building self-confidence while learning new skills in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. The activity creates an equal setting for adults and children; everybody is learning an entirely new skill, where the roles are reversed, so that the children become the learning support of their parents/carers. The aim is for families to feel less stressed and anxious, more able to have fun as a family and learn new physical skills that stretch the boundaries of what they believe they can achieve together.

Scarabeus Aerial Theatre’s vision is for aerial theatre to instigate cultural change, open up dialogues around urgent contemporary issues and encourage communities and young people to have a sense of place in the world today.

Scarabeus Aerial Theatre have been shortlisted for Best Family Arts Activity in the 2022 Fantastic for Families Awards. Winners will be announced on 16 November 2022 in the free online awards ceremony.
