30 Stories of Family Arts:
Wandsworth Arts Fringe

It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it could be a hundred different things! Music, theatre, comedy, performance art, artforartssake, art gone crazy and any other creative concoction can turn up in the Wandsworth Arts Fringe. The Fringe invigorates the borough and provides a bevy of fun entertainment for everyone. Every year, Wandsworth Arts Fringe hosts free creative family days in public spaces across the borough that encourage intergenerational creative engagement.

In 2021, these included the WAF Family Fun Day at Furzedown Rec, Roehampton Community Week, outdoor activities for families living with learning disabilities at Heathbrook Park, Happy Streets on Thessaly Road in Nine Elms, and Free-Up Festival at Battersea Arts Centre, produced by young mothers from the neighbouring estate. Jellyfish Theatre toured their outdoor show for families across Wandsworth housing estates, leading to further touring for local estates across 2021-22.

There were also productions and creative projects designed for families, including the London Mozart Players’ Little Red Riding Hood and Ferdinand the Bull, and Oily Cart’s Space to Be, a sensory show sent to homes through a series of packages, created for and with disabled young people and their families. Representing youth talent, their 2021 festival featured performances from London Children’s Ballet, Providence House Youth Club, exhibitions with the Royal College of Art and over 2,500 postcards created by Wandsworth’s primary school children capturing their memories of 2020 in Wandsworth libraries.

Wandsworth Arts Fringe have been shortlisted for Best Family Arts Activity in the 2022 Fantastic for Families Awards. Winners will be announced on 16 November 2022 in the free online awards ceremony.
