30 Stories of Family Arts:
Bristol Beacon
‘Our Music Club’ is a weekly music group for adults with dementia and their supporters, which forms part of Bristol Beacon’s age-friendly offer. They start with a cuppa, then an hour of music-making. Musicians form a band, playing songs and inviting participation too.
In developing the programme, Bristol Beacon consulted with local households. Musician, Hannah Opstad, played the trumpet in gardens and lounges to share ideas with participants. They noticed positive changes in energy, had moving interactions and gauged interest. All houses created bespoke playlists, which they posted on mp3 players via Purple Angel Campaign Scheme, giving everyone artistic inspiration.
Bristol Beacon’s Family Friendly programme includes events at Bristol Beacon and in community spaces, including an annual free family arts festival, Hoo Ha, attracting 1000s of people each year; Bloom – a singing group for mothers living with depression as a result of pregnancy or birth, and their babies and Musical Beacons – a group for families with disabled children and their Baby Friendly Choir.
Bristol Beacon has been shortlisted for Best Age-Friendly Outreach in the 2022 Fantastic for Families Awards. Winners will be announced on 16 November 2022 in the free online awards ceremony.
