30 Stories of Family Arts:
National Maritime Museum

During lockdown, the National Maritime Museum collaborated with Age Exchange to create reminiscence resources for people living with dementia and their carers who were experiencing isolation. The development of the resources aimed to reduce feelings of loneliness.

Many British museums use their collections to inspire reminiscence resources, but they largely focus on the white British experience. During consultation with Caribbean elders, members spoke of how loved ones living with dementia were taken back to early experiences in the Caribbean and how museum reminiscence resources did not accommodate these experiences. Maritime Memories aimed to address these gaps with the development of the All Aboard resources and creative workshops.

The National Maritime Museum explores our relationship to the sea as an island nation, introducing visitors to histories of exploration and encounter that have shaped the UK and the world today.

The Engagement Programme is intergenerational, providing life-long learning. The NMM uses collections to start conversations, spark memories and encourage connection.

The National Maritime Museum has been shortlisted for Best Age-Friendly Outreach in the 2022 Fantastic for Families Awards. Winners will be announced on 16 November 2022 in the free online awards ceremony.
