30 Stories of Family Arts:
The Whitworth / Unity Arts
In April 2020, the Whitworth ARTivists, part of the Age Friendly Programme, started a partnership project with Unity Arts, a Manchester based Community Arts organisation. The plan had been for a programme of face-to-face art activities, but lockdown made that impossible and a new programme was drawn up utilising online skills and tools.
Unity artists worked with the ARTivists group and ran a series of creative workshops which the group then ran with local young people and as part of community festivals. The project held an exhibition at the Whitworth in 2022 to showcase the work produced.
The Whitworth Age Friendly programme delivers weekly free artist facilitated workshops in the gallery for anyone aged 50+. Following lockdown, they moved to delivering workshops on zoom, in partnership with Unity Arts, and this meant that people who were unable to get into the gallery were able to join in from home. The workshops were decided by the group and materials were sent out in advance. Artist facilitators were also briefed to ensure the activity didn’t require specialist tools and to consider individual needs such as people with arthritis.
The Whitworth and Unity Arts have been shortlisted for Best Age-Friendly Outreach in the 2022 Fantastic for Families Awards. Winners will be announced on 16 November 2022 in the free online awards ceremony.
