Board Members
We are looking for new board members who will bring added skills and experience to help us deliver and develop our Family Arts Campaign strategy as part of Arts Council England’s Let’s Create national portfolio.
In particular, we are interested in applications from those who can bring the following to our board:
- Expertise in family engagement, ideally with direct experience of working with families
- Interest in / experience of working with excluded and/or vulnerable family groups
- Strategic thinking to help shape our wider work around income generation and sustainability
We would particularly like to see applications from those who can demonstrate a lived experience of the diverse families we are seeking to reach, including, but not exclusive to the black and global majority.
Although existing board members are of a Director/CEO level, we would like to open up more opportunities to those who are also mid-career who may be keen to develop additional experiences through being part of a board.
We welcome applications from the following:
- Middle or senior management within an arts, or charitable organisation
- Freelancers focusing on arts, culture and community projects
- Those in community focused positions within education, local council, library, community groups
Skills and experience:

- Show commitment to the Family Arts Campaign, and our aims and objectives
- Have the courage and willingness to speak their mind in the boardroom
- Can work effectively as a member of the team
- Can think creatively and problem solve
- Have good, independent judgement
- Are willing to devote the necessary time and commitment to their duties as a Family Arts Campaign board member
- Have experience of working with family audiences and communities to develop and lead work for children, parents & carers
- Are passionate about access and inclusivity
Board responsibilities
You will be joining a board with six existing members six existing members, including:
Cath Hume (Chair), CEO of Arts Marketing Association
Alison Bowyer, Executive Director of Kids in Museums
Gavin Barlow, CEO and Artistic Director of The Albany
Sarah Mears, Programme Manager of Libraries Connected
Robert O’Dowd, Chief Executive of Rose Theatre Kingston
Karla Barnacle-Best, CEO of Discover Children’s Story Centre
As a Family Arts Board member, you will be expected to:
- Attend board meetings every three months. These meetings will be delivered on Zoom for 2 hours, with the potential of an in-person meeting once a year.
- Provide strategic support for the Family Arts Campaign, helping to develop our aims, objectives and programme to be more impactful for cultural organisations and for families.
- Give input on ideas and suggestions for programmes, projects and activities and suggestions for improvement on Family Arts Campaign objectives.
- Review budget and cash flow and provide support on developing fundraising and income generation work.
- Support the Family Arts Campaign to embed Arts Council England’s Investment Principles to help improve our work in Inclusivity and Relevance, Ambition and Quality, Dynamism and Environmental Responsibility.
- Review board papers and minutes from board meetings.
- Ensure good governance and best practice, supporting the organisation in complying with legislative and regulatory requirements.

- The role is a voluntary position; however, any reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
- You do not need to have academic or professional qualifications to be considered for the role.
- You do not need to have had previous experience as a Trustee/board member to be considered for the role.

How to apply
If you are interested in becoming a Family Arts Campaign board member, there are two ways in which you can submit your application. With your submission, we ask all applicants to also submit a completed Equality and Diversity Monitoring Form.
Option One
You may choose to submit a CV and a covering letter (no more than two pages of A4) setting out why you are interested in becoming a Family Arts Campaign board member and what you will bring to the role.
Option Two
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can submit a video, of no more than five minutes, telling us about your experience and why you are interested in joining the board and what you will bring to the role.

Please submit your application to the Family Arts Campaign Executive Director, Anna Dever via email (anna.dever@thealbany.org.uk) no later than 5pm on Thursday 6 April 2023.
From there, we will be hosting interviews on Monday 24, Tuesday 25 and Thursday 27 April. These will take place online via Zoom.
